Squalicum HS Graduate Hannah Truong named 'National Volunteer Student of the Year'
Truong was featured on the Katie Couric Show on October 28

Last February, while Hannah Truong was finishing her senior year at Squalicum High School, she applied for local scholarships through the Whatcom Community Foundation's Bellingham Dollars for Scholars program. Hannah was one of 83 graduating seniors from Whatcom County high schools to receive a scholarship. The online application process also gave Hannah access to national scholarships. One of those awards was the Community Volunteer Service Award scholarship. Hannah, along with Bellingham High School graduate Bradley Anderson who also received one of the National Community Volunteer Service Award scholarships, were two of only twenty-four students across the country to receive this award; an impressive achievement on its own.

Hannah received an additional honor when Scholarship America (the national organization for Dollars for Scholars programs) announced that Hannah Truong was selected as the 2013 Scholarship America Dollars for Scholars National Student Volunteer of the Year.  This is a prestigious renewable scholarship award to assist her in financing her education.  Hannah, who is attending Yale University, will be appearing on the Katie Show on Monday, October 28, during an episode devoted to the power of scholarships.

Mary Wynne, Vice President for Scholarship America Dollars for Scholars, shared, "We are very pleased that Dollars for Scholars, both at the local and national level, can support such an outstanding and deserving student. We also couldn't be happier that Hannah is being showcased on the upcoming Katie show. You are a terrific representative of the kind of student that Scholarship America's Dollars for Scholars program has been supporting since 1958."

"Hannah is the first in her family to attend college. And, despite the demands of her studies and all the adjustments of being on her own thousands of miles from home and family, she is already immersed in volunteering. She is serving as an elected student government representative as well as doing outreach work serving people experiencing homelessness in New Haven. She is impressive by any standard," noted Mauri Ingram, CEO of the Whatcom Community Foundation, adding, "Hannah's local scholarship was made possible by the Rotary Club of Bellingham Foundation (for Best Overall Student). We are immensely grateful to the RCOB Foundation. Hannah embodies the Rotary motto, "Service above self". We all feel like we've made an investment in this incredible young woman."
